Miracle Swimming’s Core Courses

Course Schedule
Introductory Course

The moment you’ve overcome your fear in deep water, you’ve learned to swim. The natural order is that you learn to swim inefficiently before you learn to swim efficiently! Learn to swim first: to be comfortable, confident and safe in deep water. Strokes are irrelevant to becoming comfortable, confident and safe in deep water. Strokes are for efficiency. None of our core courses involves strokes.

If your goal is to be a lap swimmer or triathlete, then once you’ve learned to swim, it makes sense to learn to swim efficiently.

When you master the skills of one course you may proceed to the next. You may repeat a course as many times as necessary to master it.

Everyone starts with either the Beginning or Ultra Beginning course. Though you may be comfortable in shallow water, if you are someone who relies on the bottom or side for your safety in water now,  you need to learn how to rely on yourself: this starts in our Beginning or Ultra Beginning course. There are basics to learn regarding preventing panic and understanding how the water works. They are essential. We have not seen them elsewhere in 37 years.

Start from where you are today–the perfect place–and see how our classes surprise you.

Everyone Starts Here

Take “Beginning” or “Ultra Beginning” to get started on a new path to freedom in water.

You may wish to take our Introductory Course to get a 2.5 hour taste of Miracle Swimming to see if it’s exactly what you’re looking for!

Start at the beginning with essentials you won’t find elsewhere.  We cover all the shallow water skills you need while you remain happy. Begin to learn how to be at ease in the deep, too, by beginning to rely on yourself for your safety, not the bottom or the side. (24 hours)

Prerequisite: you must have fear in deep water.

This course is exactly like our Beginning Course except that it goes more slowly and we do not intend to enter deep water. You spend more time learning to let the water support you in the very shallow water where you can place your hands on the bottom, and less time in standard depths. (24 hours)

Prerequisite: you must be fearful in water.

Pool Competency

After completing either Beginning or Ultra Beginning, two additional courses in this series make up our core offering that reliably takes an adult from any level of fear in water to complete freedom and peace of mind in water over one’s head in a pool. Learn at your own pace.

The goal of this course is to become calm in water over your head. When  you’ve mastered this course, you can rest and play in deep water without getting tired for 10 or 15 minutes.  (24 hours)

Prerequisites: Beginning or Ultra Beginning course. You can float and unfloat, roll over, and do reversals in shallow water peacefully.

Become nimble in the deep end! Learn to use the water and your body to pick up the keys you dropped in the deep, find a nose clip, play games, swim along the bottom, do stunts. (15 hours)

Prerequisites: you can rest and bob and swim around the deep end peacefully for at least 5 minutes away from the wall.  Next Step course is recommended.

Open Water Competency

After completing the Pool Competency courses, two additional courses are available for achieving complete freedom in water over one’s head in the ocean or lake. You may become free sooner.

This class takes place on the beach. Learn how to enter the ocean by navigating waves and breakers. Learn how your pool skills transfer to the ocean and how to take care of yourself regarding water conditions, rip currents, critters, and salt water. (12 hours)

Prerequisites: you must be a Beginning or Ultra-Beginning class graduate and able to float, unfloat, do reversals, and roll over peacefully.

In this class, we start by jumping into the deep end at the pool and end by jumping off a boat out in the open waters of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico! (9-10 hours)

Prerequisites: you have completed our Next Step course. Ocean 101 is also recommended, but not required.

Advanced Courses

Our students have requested courses in the 4 strokes, snorkeling, SCUBA diving and swimming with dolphins in the wild. We have taught them locally and in beautiful vacation destinations around the world. When you’re ready for one of these advanced classes, there is a Request Form to tell us your desired course and your time availability. When we receive a minimum number of requests for a given class, it will be placed on our schedule.
